To attract skilled people who want to build a career with us. It’s a competitive labour market so we need to evidence that we are a great employer.

Also to retain our staff, they are dedicated and talented and we benefit directly from their engagement and commitment.

How do you think the standards positively impact your employees and business as a whole?

We can evidence that we do what we say. We take action. This builds job security and therefore commitment from our staff. This translates directly into supporting our customers.

The standards are based on established, well-researched tools and techniques to inspire engaged staff that care about our customers. They are also ethically right and are proven to attract and retain the people we need to grow our business.

What do you think the benefits are of introducing good employment practice across the West of England?

The South West of England is a fantastic location, whatever stage you are at in life. The more good quality roles we have, the more people can take advantage of living here. That creates a bigger talent pool for all businesses, and becomes a virtuous circle.

It’s all about being able to evidence that you are a great employer. It gives candidates reassurance and your current staff a standard they know we have committed to. It’s also a good way to position and assess new policies and ideas; do they contribute to, and reinforce the aims of our standard?

The Good Employment Charter is an accreditation scheme that aims to improve employment standards in the West of England for organisations of all sizes and sectors, through characteristics that will raise the value and quality of work, allowing employers to become an ‘employer of choice’, leading them to higher staff retention rates, better productivity and contributing to a thriving economy.

The West of England Good Employment Charter will set the standard for working practices in the region. Supporting businesses of any size or sector to improve investment in their staff, enabling more inclusive, equitable & sustainable working practices, positively benefiting people, society, and the wider economy.
